Every year, the Georgia State University Library participates in an important program that meets the needs of beginning archivists and students, as well as manuscript curators and librarians who require professional development. From June 16 - June 18 the library’s Special Collections department hosted several students from the Georgia Archives Institute. These students receive hands on experience and were guided through a practice project working on a small collection.

The Georgia Archives Institute, co-sponsored by the Georgia Archives, the Society of Georgia Archivists and Auburn Avenue Research Library, has provided an annual, intensive course in archival practice since 1967. It provides a training ground for students to get a crash course in archival work. This begins with a weeklong intensive classroom experience. Following that, a half-dozen diverse Georgia institutions, including the Georgia State University Library, host students to provide them practical experience in an archive. The entire program serves as an introductory course for students and beginners, and as professional development for librarians, curators and others who work with historical material.

The Georgia State University Library has participated in the program for over twenty-years and a number of Special Collections department staff members are graduates. “The hands on experience is invaluable, “said Jill Sweetapple, one of the participants. Sweetapple is an intern at the Georgia Archives who is finishing her M.L.I.S. from Florida State University, “The first week of class was great, but until you start doing it… it was very theoretical.” Sweetapple was joined by Emily Erwin, University Archivist at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, as well as Janet DeForest, Coordinator of Research Information Services at The Carter Center in Atlanta. “I can’t imagine any place where you walk in the door and can start handling everything,” said Deforest, “You can see how it works and ask questions.”

These participants worked in the archives for three-days, getting practical know-how from Georgia State’s experienced archivists. The library participates in this excellent professional development opportunity every year, so if you’re interested in participating you can find more information about the program here.

When many Georgia State graduate students finish their theses or dissertations, their documents are digitized and made available electronically. Now these graduates have a voice representing just how their digital research will be shared in the future.Dr. Nancy H. Seamans, the Dean of Libraries at Georgia State University, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD). With her expertise in both libraries and the electronic theses and dissertation process, Dean Seamans is hoping to bring a unique perspective to the board.

Dr. Seamans began her tenure as the Dean of Libraries at Georgia State University in August 2008. She holds a Doctorate in Instructional Technology from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a graduate student at Virginia Tech in 1997 when it became the first institution to require electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), she has published and made presentations about the ETD process, and her dissertation is available as an unrestricted electronic document. A common thread of her work has been her commitment to serving library users in an era of rapid changes in the technology of information delivery and retrieval.

The NDLTD is an international organization dedicated to promoting the adoption, creation, use, dissemination and preservation of electronic analogues to the traditional paper-based theses and dissertations. The Board of Directors boasts scholars from all over the world. Dean Seamans will join that prestigious group in educating graduate students in electronic publishing, making ETDs accessible worldwide and ensuring that library technology stays compatible with the rate of knowledge generated from new research results.

Without people like Hilary Morrish, we might forget Atlanta’s older neighborhoods. On May 20th 2009, Morrish (a Georgia State University Library Technical Assistant) received the 2009 Historic Preservation Achievement Award from the Georgia Historic Preservation Division. Her contribution is significant to the historic preservation of Georgia, as Morrish and others documented the Collier Heights neighborhood and contributed to it being the first African-American ranch neighborhood nominated for the National Registrar.

With an undergraduate degree in history, Morrish organizes, describes and prepares finding aids for the University Library’s collections of historical value. She also assists patrons with their research inquiries. “I have always enjoyed old buildings,” says Morrish, “I remember exploring old abandoned buildings as a child. They are such a catalyst for the imagination.” Morrish believes each building has a story to tell, one that reveals its evolution.Morrish and her fellow graduate students certainly revealed the story of Collier Heights. As part of their program work in Georgia State University’s Heritage Preservations Program, the group compiled enough supporting documentation to nominate Collier Heights to the Historic District National Registrar. According to the Georgia Historic Preservation Division’s press release:

Collier Heights is Atlanta and Georgia’s largest and most significant mid-20th-century African-American suburb. When it was being developed during the 1950s and 1960s, it was heralded nationally as the country’s premier African-American suburb, developed by as well as for African Americans. Yet until recently, its history was largely undocumented, the area was not represented in any field surveys, and its significance was not widely known.

Morrish’s group worked to illuminate that importance by surveying the massive neighborhood and documenting the lives of a sample of its original residents. “As we explored the history,” she said, “We realized this neighborhood was a cradle so to speak, for many leaders of the Civil Rights movement.” By recording the history of this suburb, these students were able to establish a research model that will be useful when documenting other 20th Century African-American suburban developments.Morrish’s award is well deserved, as her efforts have ensured that a neighborhood vital to Atlanta’s history will not be forgotten.

The library recently purchased the International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest. From the introduction:

This encyclopedia encompasses the most comprehensive examination of modern-era revolutions, uprisings, and protest movements. It chronicles the ideas, ideologies, and activists that propelled these movements, tracing their roots, goals, tactics, successes, and failures. While numerous manifestos, analytic perspectives, explanatory works, and compelling larger collections have been assembled previously, this sweeping work elucidates the impressive and path-breaking action of the subjugated, disenfranchised, and ideologically motivated in inciting social change throughout the world, from 1500 to the present era.

This project also examines how different revolutions, uprisings, and protest movements have influenced one another and how they compare politically, economically, socially, and culturally. Accordingly, it introduces readers to the historiography and conceptual debates such manifestations have provoked, suggesting new, critical paths of inquiry into their legacies. This project elevates the study of revolution and protest, comprising a review of actual human behavior and organizational practice, motivated and directed toward expanding historical and social science research on the subject. It seeks to be a definitive account of the actions of human beings that transformed their material and social conditions – actions that frequently transformed the world in the process.

Chris Stotelmyer has been named the spring 2009 recipient of the Carolyn L. Robison Library Award. Chris’ five years of service at Georgia State, as a student assistant and employee, have represented the educational values and high professional standards of Dr. Robison during her years of service at the University Library.

Chris is a Library Technical Assistant for the Learning Commons and is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science at Valdosta State University. His supervisor, La Loria Konata, remarks that Chris “has exhibited his professionalism through pro-activity, customer service, and problem-solving,” and she also states that “he will surely be a great benefit to the profession.” Chris’s immediate goal is to become a generalist librarian, and he aspires to be a health science librarian in the future.

The Robison Library Award was established in honor of Dr. Carolyn L. Robison upon her retirement after a 31 year career at Georgia State University Library. The fund also strives to promote Dr. Robison’s long term interest in encouraging the development of library staff members. This award provides financial assistance to a staff member of the University Library or the College of Law Library who is pursuing further education for a career in libraries. All of us at the Library are most grateful of the steadfast generosity of Dr. Robison.

2009 Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History – Award Winners

Three recipients were recently selected to receive the Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History:

· Matthew Dimick, graduate student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His research topic is “Labor Law and Union Democracy: A British-U.S. Comparison.”

· Jordan Patty, processing archivist and librarian at George Mason University Libraries Special Collections and Archives. His research topic is “Public Transit, Ownership and Labor in the United States, 1935-1975.”

· Benjamin van der Horst, recent graduate of Emory University’s Department of History (MA). His research topic is “Delta Air Lines and Eastern Airlines: a case study of deregulation in the airline industry.”

Each of these projects will require substantial research using the collections in the Southern Labor Archives. This year’s winners were chosen by a review committee composed of Ian Fletcher (History Department, Georgia State University), Robert Woodrum (History Department, Clark Atlanta University), Traci Drummond (Archivist, Southern Labor Archives, Georgia State University Library), and Stephen Zietz (Head, Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library).

The Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History was established in 2000 to honor Dr. Merl Reed, professor, scholar and founder of the archives, for his many contributions to education and labor history. A fellowship of $250-$500 is awarded annually to individuals whose research in the Southern Labor Archives will lead to a book, article, dissertation, or other substantive product. In return, recipients will make a presentation about their research to the Georgia State University community within one academic year after receiving the award. Faculty members, graduate students, upper-level undergraduates, and recognized independent scholars and artists are encouraged to apply.

To be considered for the 2010 Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History, applicants should submit on or before November 30, 2009. Please contact Traci Drummond (tdrummond@gsu.edu) with any questions or for more information.

Latin American Newspapers represents the initial result of the partnership between the Center for Research Libraries community and Readex, a division of NewsBank to systematically create an extensive Web-based collection of international newspapers. CRL will guarantee the long-term availability of this news content for the CRL community.

This groundbreaking online collection provides more than 35 fully searchable Latin American newspapers published in the 19th and 20th centuries. Featuring titles from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela and elsewhere, Latin American Newspapers offers unprecedented coverage of the people, issues and events that shaped this vital region between 1805 and 1922.

Latin American Newspapers features such key publications as La Nacion, La Prensa and Vanguardia (Buenos Aires), Correio da Manha and Jornal do Commercio (Rio de Janeiro), O Estado de São Paulo (São Paulo), Mercurio (Santiago), La Prensa (Havana), El Guatemalteco (Guatemala City), Daily Chronicle (Georgetown, Guyana), La Revista de Yucatan (Merida, Mexico), La Patria, Mexican Herald and El Monitor Republicano (Mexico City) , El Dictamen (Veracruz Llave, Mexico), La Estrella de Panama and Star & Herald (Panama City), El Peruano and West Coast Leader (Lima), Port of Spain Gazette (Port of Spain), the Venezuelan Herald (Caracas) and more than a dozen others.

Latin American Newspapers now contains more than 425,000 pages of content. New titles and issues will be released periodically on a rolling basis at a rate of nearly 100,000 pages per month, with an initial goal of one million pages by fall 2009. The collection will contain potentially more than 1.5 million pages by the end of the project.

The Kaleidoscopic Concern highlights the development of the myriad of issues surrounding racial and ethnic diversity in librarianship, and gives insight into concerns, goals, and strategies surrounding the recruitment, retention and advancement of librarians of color. This work contains over 80 years of the profession’s earliest training initiatives and more current best practices; and the evolution of the specific idea of affirmative action to the more nebulous concept of diversity can be traced as well. Additionally, the Kaleidoscopic Concern also covers new ideas and areas of study (gender issues, White privilege) with regard to racial minority and ethnic librarians. Books (and book chapters), dissertations, theses, articles, poster sessions, presentations, and multimedia objects are included, and various reports from professional library associations and divisions and ARL SPEC Kits have also been gathered and annotated in this work. A useful tool for researchers interested in any aspect of minority librarianship or racial and ethnic diversity in librarianship.

The preface states, “Readers will find in the Schirmer Encyclopedia of Film the major facts about film history, clear explanations of the main theoretical concepts and lines of scholarly interpretation, and guidance through important debates. Approaching cinema as art, entertainment, and industry, the Encyclopedia features entries on all important genres, studios, and national cinemas, as well as entries on relevant technological and industrial topics, cultural issues, and critical approaches to film.” Read reviews of this title on Amazon.com

From the introduction,”By covering all of the major theories, approaches, and contemporary issues in counseling, the encyclopedia includes close to 600 entries. To enable the reader to understand the major approaches and themes within the field of counseling, the current encyclopedia has been divided into four volumes: (1) changes and challenges facing counseling, (2) personal and emotional counseling, (3) crosscultural counseling, and (4) career counseling. However, each volume will also contain a cross-volume Reader’s Guide and a cross-referencing system to entries in other volumes. In this way, we have created a flexible encyclopedia that can be used together as a set or separately by volume depending on the need of the user.” Read reviews of this title on Amazon.com

This month, Lyrasis honored Georgia State University Learning Commons Librarian Sarah Steiner with the 2009 NextGen Librarian Award for Outreach. Lyrasis is a library network formed in 2009 after the merger of well-established library groups PALINET and SOLINET. It presents the awards to five NextGen librarians each year. They selected Steiner this year because of her significant publications and presentations, her activity in the Georgia Library Association, and her initiative in developing better virtual research support at Georgia State University.

Steiner reaches out to Georgia State students through a variety of technologies, including Facebook, YouTube, blogging and instant messaging. Under her guidance, the online chat service at the Georgia State University Library has seen a surge in users. Throughout the school year, Steiner also conducts information literacy classes for students online.

Along with her devotion to virtual reference, Steiner is very active in the Georgia Library Association. In 2008, she was the chair of their New Members Round Table. She is also the founder of the Atlanta Emerging Librarians, an organization that provides library, information and media science students the opportunity to network with their future colleagues. Since many of these students are in distance learning programs, this organization helps them develop peer relationships with other emerging librarians. It has been extremely successful, with almost one hundred people attending their meetings at various metro Atlanta libraries.

Finally, Steiner already has significant publications and presentations under her belt. Most significantly, Steiner co-edited a book titled The Desk and Beyond: Next Generation Reference Services. This collection deals with innovative approaches to in-person and remote reference services in academic libraries. She has also co-authored an article on wiki usage in academic libraries, as well as performing several presentations on how wikis and other Web 2.0 applications can affect library services.

Sarah Steiner is truly a rising library leader, with her multiple publications and presentations, together with her activity in the Georgia library community and her improvement of online library services. She well deserves the NextGen Librarian Award, since she is constantly developing new ways to communicate with the next generation of students and librarians.

Dear Members of the Georgia State University Community:

In light of current budget uncertainties and in anticipation of no new funds added to the library materials budget for fiscal year 2010, the library is initiating a journal cancellation project. Based on average annual price increases of eight percent on journal subscriptions over the past several years, the library needs to identify for cancellation at least $400,000 in recurring commitments.

At our Journal Cancellation Project web page, you will find a memo from Nan Seamans, Dean of Libraries, a complete project timeline, and the list of titles that are candidates for cancellation. A combination of criteria were used to determine the titles on the list, including usage statistics, cost per use, and availability of alternative means of access to the title.

If you have a concern about specific titles on the list, please complete the online comment form available for each title. We would appreciate comments that justify the retention of the journal. If you have any questions, please contact your department’s liaison librarian or Skye Hardesty, Collection Development Officer.

Please note that the comment period for feedback is from 3/9/09 to 5/1/09.

We value your assistance in shaping the library’s journal collection to reflect the university’s current curriculum and research needs.

In the March 2009 issue of Library Journal, the magazine’s editors added Georgia State University Librarian Casey Long to their list of “Movers & Shakers” for 2009. As the role of libraries changes through the 21st century, it is important that new leaders like Long emerge to guide the transformation. Being selected as part of this group requires innovation and imagination. Long’s demonstrated improvement of student information literacy in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business easily qualified her for the honor.

Library Journal has been identifying librarians like Long as Movers & Shakers since 2002. They are people who the editors believe will shape the future of libraries. Each tries new ideas and strategies, while using technology to solve problems creatively. Some of these librarians rise to prominence, as many library directors search for new talent at the annual Movers & Shakers luncheon at the American Library Association’s summer conference.

Library Journal selected Long because of her determination to improve student information literacy. As a business liaison librarian for the Georgia State University Library, Long found that many seniors in the business program were not adequately prepared to do their research. In 2006 & 2007, she received instruction awards from the College of Business and the University Center for Teaching and Learning. Both were for developing an instruction session that she quantitatively proved to be effective at improving how students find and utilize information. Armed with this evidence, Long is convincing business instructors to integrate an undergraduate information literacy program into their core business classes. By working strategically with three core courses, Long hopes to ensure all undergraduate business students are prepared with the information seeking skills necessary for success in their careers. She maintains this engaging curriculum by sustaining relationships with faculty throughout the business school.

Casey Long’s commitment to assisting the university community is why Library Journal selected her for the Movers & Shakers of 2009. Through her “zealous pursuit” of a thriving information literacy program, she is helping define the future of libraries with fresh ideas and devoted service.

Faculty members, graduate students, upper-level undergraduates, and recognized independent scholars and artists are encouraged to apply.

The Southern Labor Archives, established in 1971, is dedicated to collecting, preserving and making available the documentary heritage of Southern workers and their unions, as well as that of workers and unions having an historic relationship to the region.

From OCLC Abstracts, Jan. 26, 2009:

New pilot puts WorldCat.org on your mobile phone

OCLC is pleased to announce the release of the WorldCat Mobile pilot—a program that brings WorldCat.org to hand-held communications devices, such as PDAs and smartphones. The new application was created in collaboration with Boopsie, Inc., a provider of software for mobile and cellular devices. For the initial pilot, WorldCat Mobile will be operational throughout the United States and Canada. The pilot will gather data to inform and help shape future mobile access to WorldCat.org.

Thanks to advanced global positioning capabilities found in many smartphones and PDAs, WorldCat Mobile users will be able to find local library materials no matter where they happen to be. Users will also receive a map of the library location.

To speed the search and discovery process, WorldCat Mobile uses “multiprefix incremental search,” which means users can simply type the first few letters of a book title, library location or book category and matching results will immediately appear on screen.

It takes only a minute to download the application. Just go to the WorldCat Mobile Web page where you will find additional information about the pilot and links for downloading WorldCat Mobile to the device of your choice. To access from your mobile device, go to www.worldcat.org/m/.

After giving WorldCat Mobile a try, please let us know what you think at worldcatmobilepilot@oclc.org. The pilot program will be most successful with feedback from the library community.

WorldCat Mobile is currently available for download on the following PDAs and smartphones:

Android (Google gPhone)

Blackberry

iPhone

Palm OS

Symbian S60 (Nokia)

Frustrated when you go to the bank or the post office, only to find that they are closed for the day? Just so you won’t be frustrated with us, we at the Georgia State University Library want to understand your need for hours of operation that will coincide with your busy schedules.

The Library and the Student Government Association have partnered and are asking for your assistance in evaluating our hours. There are now two ways you can cooperate with us:

First, if you go to http://tinyurl.com/b7xvsb you can fill out a quick survey about the library’s hours.

Second, the library will be hosting several focus groups this semester to hear your voices directly. To participate in one of these groups, please contact Jennifer Jones at jlink@gsu.edu.

It is the library’s mission to ensure that we meet the needs of the university community. We hope that with your cooperation we can identify ways that we may be able to better serve you.

When you download EndNote, it comes in a zipped package (endnoteX2win.zip). Simply right click on the package, select the “extract all” option and follow the prompts. This will create a new folder called endnoteX2win. Inside the folder will be an installation file (ENX2Inst.msi) and a license file. Run the installation file from the new folder to avoid being prompted for the product key.

The library had offered access to the Child Abuse, Child Welfare and Adoption Database, but that product is being discontinued. In its place, we have added a link to the Child Welfare Information Gateway. From the announcement from NISC:

The two clearinghouses that compiled the data for the Child Abuse, Child Welfare & Adoption Database, National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information and the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse were consolidated into the Child Welfare Information Gateway. The Child Welfare Information Gateway is managed by ICF International and is a service of the Children’s Bureau within the Administration for Children and Families of the Department of Health and Human Services. The Gateway provides access to resources including print and electronic publications, websites, databases and more covering topics related to child safety, welfare and adoption.

Student e-mail system will be replaced using Microsoft as its provider. It will have 5 gigs of storage for students. The e- mail address will remain the same (i.e. jdoe123@student.gsu.edu). This change will take place on October 1, 2008.
Giving alumni access to the new e-mail system provided by Microsoft is still under investigation.
