Presentation: The Origins of Labor-Union Democracy: A US-British Comparison

Matthew Dimick, winner of the 2009 Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History, will present on his topic on Friday, November 20, 2009. The presentation will be held at noon in the Colloquium Room at the Georgia State University Library (Library South, 8th Floor). The presentation is free and open to the public.

“The Origins of Labor-Union Democracy: A US-British Comparison” will focus on the internal democratic governance of labor unions and its potential, according to scholars and activists, to revitalize the labor movement in the US. This presentation examines the origins of union democracy by comparing the historical trajectories of the British Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU) and the American International Association of Machinists (IAM). Despite a large amount of research on union democracy, very little of it has addressed the topic in a historical-comparative context. Thus, while it is known that levels of democracy differ significantly between US and British unions, no one has asked when these differences arose or what caused them.

Matthew Dimick is currently a Law Research Fellow at Georgetown University Law Center. He holds a JD from Cornell Law School and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Between law school and graduate studies he worked in the General Counsel’s office of the Service Employees International Union in Washington, DC. His research centers on the relationships between law, labor unions, the labor market, and the economy, using historical and comparative methods to study questions arising from these topics.

Created in 2000, the Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History was named, at the urging of Dr. Gary Fink, to honor Dr. Reed’s career and role in the founding of the Southern Labor Archives. The award has recently been re-named to honor both Dr. Gary Fink and Dr. Reed, and beginning in 2010, the awards will carry the new name.

One or more awards of $250-$500 are given annually to individuals whose research in the Southern Labor Archives will lead to a book, article, dissertation, or other substantive product. In return, recipients agree to make a presentation about their research to the Georgia State University community within one academic year after receiving the award. Faculty members, graduate students, upper-level undergraduates, and recognized independent scholars and artists are encouraged to apply.

The deadline for the 2010 Reed Fink Award is November 30, 2009. For more information about the award, the presentation, or the Southern Labor Archives, please contact Traci Drummond at 404.413.2880 or at tdrummond@gsu.edu.

Benjamin van der Horst, winner of the 2009 Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History, will present his research on Friday, October 16, 2009. The event will be held at noon in Classroom 2 of the Georgia State University Library (2nd Floor of Library North).

Van der Horst currently works as a research analyst for a public policy research firm in suburban Washington, D.C. A lifelong student of American history, he has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Emory University. His research mainly focuses on 20th century America, specifically on the rise of airlines and their impact on American life. His master’s thesis focused on the two major airlines in Atlanta for the second half of the 20th century, Delta and Eastern, and how their similar paths diverged in the 1980s.

This presentation will revolve around the two airlines during the first era (1978-1991) of airline deregulation. It will include explanations of the decisions made by both Eastern Air Lines and Delta Air Lines during this period and how these decisions led to Eastern’s demise and Delta’s success. A brief history of airline regulation and of each airline will be given. Van der Horst argues that four big decisions made by Eastern Air Lines in this period explain why the airline went from being the largest American airline in terms of passengers carried at the beginning of the deregulated era to a failed airline just over ten years later. These include problems with organized labor and the decision to sell the airline to Frank Lorenzo.

Van der Horst contends that four decisions made by Delta Air Lines in this same period explain why the airline went from being a mainly regional carrier to one of the three main American airlines during this first era of airline deregulation. While Delta’s story is not as dramatic as Eastern’s, it provides a useful foil for the chaotic decade Eastern faced. When the stories of these two airlines are put together, we see that the deregulated era forced airlines to make decisions that either they could not or did not have to make when regulated that determined the fate of each airline.

The Reed Fellowship was recently re-named the Reed Fink Award in Southern Labor History to honor two early supporters of Georgia State University Library’s Southern Labor Archives. One or more fellowship(s) of $250-$500 are awarded annually to individuals whose research in the Southern Labor Archives will lead to a book, article, dissertation, or other substantive product.
Professors Merl E. Reed and Gary Fink were instrumental in the establishment, development, and use of the Southern Labor Archives at Georgia State University from the early 1970s. Today, the Southern Labor Archives has over 500 collections used by researchers from throughout the Southeast, the United States, and the world. Created in 2000, the Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History was named, at the urging of Dr. Fink, to honor Dr. Reed’s career and role in the founding of the Southern Labor Archives. After Dr. Fink passed away in 2008, Dr. Reed requested that the name of the Fellowship be changed to honor Dr. Fink as well. The Reed Fink Award in Southern Labor History now honors both men and their many contributions to education, labor studies, and the Southern Labor Archives.

The Southern Labor Archives, part of Georgia State University Library’s Special Collection and Archives, was established in 1971, and is dedicated to collecting, preserving and making available the documentary heritage of Southern workers and their unions, as well as that of workers and unions having an historic relationship to the region.

One or more Reed Fink Awards of $250-$500 will be awarded annually to individuals whose research in the Southern Labor Archives will lead to a book, article, dissertation, or other substantive product. In return, recipients agree to make a presentation about their research to the Georgia State University community within one academic year after receiving the award.

Faculty members, graduate students, upper-level undergraduates, and recognized independent scholars and artists are encouraged to apply. To be considered for the 2010 Reed Fink Award in Southern Labor History, application packets must be completed and submitted by November 30, 2009.

Without people like Hilary Morrish, we might forget Atlanta’s older neighborhoods. On May 20th 2009, Morrish (a Georgia State University Library Technical Assistant) received the 2009 Historic Preservation Achievement Award from the Georgia Historic Preservation Division. Her contribution is significant to the historic preservation of Georgia, as Morrish and others documented the Collier Heights neighborhood and contributed to it being the first African-American ranch neighborhood nominated for the National Registrar.

With an undergraduate degree in history, Morrish organizes, describes and prepares finding aids for the University Library’s collections of historical value. She also assists patrons with their research inquiries. “I have always enjoyed old buildings,” says Morrish, “I remember exploring old abandoned buildings as a child. They are such a catalyst for the imagination.” Morrish believes each building has a story to tell, one that reveals its evolution.Morrish and her fellow graduate students certainly revealed the story of Collier Heights. As part of their program work in Georgia State University’s Heritage Preservations Program, the group compiled enough supporting documentation to nominate Collier Heights to the Historic District National Registrar. According to the Georgia Historic Preservation Division’s press release:

Collier Heights is Atlanta and Georgia’s largest and most significant mid-20th-century African-American suburb. When it was being developed during the 1950s and 1960s, it was heralded nationally as the country’s premier African-American suburb, developed by as well as for African Americans. Yet until recently, its history was largely undocumented, the area was not represented in any field surveys, and its significance was not widely known.

Morrish’s group worked to illuminate that importance by surveying the massive neighborhood and documenting the lives of a sample of its original residents. “As we explored the history,” she said, “We realized this neighborhood was a cradle so to speak, for many leaders of the Civil Rights movement.” By recording the history of this suburb, these students were able to establish a research model that will be useful when documenting other 20th Century African-American suburban developments.Morrish’s award is well deserved, as her efforts have ensured that a neighborhood vital to Atlanta’s history will not be forgotten.

Three recipients were recently selected to receive the Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History:

· Matthew Dimick, graduate student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His research topic is “Labor Law and Union Democracy: A British-U.S. Comparison.”

· Jordan Patty, processing archivist and librarian at George Mason University Libraries Special Collections and Archives. His research topic is “Public Transit, Ownership and Labor in the United States, 1935-1975.”

· Benjamin van der Horst, recent graduate of Emory University’s Department of History (MA). His research topic is “Delta Air Lines and Eastern Airlines: a case study of deregulation in the airline industry.”

Each of these projects will require substantial research using the collections in the Southern Labor Archives.

2008 Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History Two recipients were recently selected to receive the Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History award: Lisa Gayle Hazirjian for her work on “The Legend of Operation Dixie and the Long Labor Movement in Eastern North Carolina” and Benjamin Houston for his work on “The Nashville Way: A Southern City and Racial Change, 1945-1975.” Each of these projects will require substantial research using the collections in the Southern Labor Archives. This year’s winners were chosen by a review committee composed of Ian Fletcher (History Department, Georgia State University), Robert Woodrum (History Department, Clark Atlanta University), Traci Drummond (Archivist, Southern Labor Archives, Georgia State University Library), and Stephen Zietz (Head, Special Collections and Archives, Georgia State University Library). The Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History was established in 2000 to honor Dr. Merl Reed, professor, scholar and founder of the archives, for his many contributions to education and labor history. A fellowship of $250-$500 is awarded annually to individuals whose research in the Southern Labor Archives will lead to a book, article, dissertation, or other substantive product. In return, recipients will make a presentation about their research to the Georgia State University community within one academic year after receiving the award. Faculty members, graduate students, upper-level undergraduates, and recognized independent scholars and artists are encouraged to apply. To be considered for the 2009 Merl E. Reed Fellowship in Southern Labor History, applicants should submit on or before November 30, 2008. Please contact Traci Drummond with any questions (tdrummond@gsu.edu).

From the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers website:

On June 10, 1963 John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act eliminating the standard of paying women less than men for the same job. But 40 years later, women are still paid less than men, even when they have similar education, skills and experience.

April 19 is Equal Pay Day. The date symbolizes how far into the year women must work, on average, to earn what men earned the previous year. Today, women earn 76 cents for every $1.00 a man makes. Last year the figure was 77 cents for every $1.00, the last time it declined was 1999.

If equal pay were implemented nationwide, women’s wages would raise by 13 percent and men’s wages by one percent. To see how your state ranks, click here.

On display in Library South 8, the exhibit features oral history excerpts, historical documents and artifacts from the library’s Women’s Collections, and pays tribute to the women who had the strength and courage to fight for women’s rights.

Hear Me Roar also celebrates the ten-year anniversary of the Georgia Women’s Movement Oral History Project. The project began in 1995 as a joint endeavor of the library’s Special Collections Department and the then-newly created Women’s Studies Institute. Oral histories collected through the project describe participants involvement with the Women’s Movement and with efforts to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in Georgia.

The exhibit is on display through March, 2006, and was curated by by Morna Gerrard and Trish Bogdan of Special Collections.

A public celebration to mark the anniversary will be held 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2005, on the eighth floor of Library South. The event program will feature three women closely involved with the project: Cathey Steinberg, the primary sponsor of the 1981-82 Equal Rights Amendment in Georgia; Janet Paulk, feminist and women’s rights activist; and frances anne Pici, a doctoral student at Georgia State. Refreshments will be served.

Oral histories collected through the project enhance the Women’s Collections, one of six special collections housed in the library. Nearly 50 oral histories have been collected to date.

Amongst the jewels of the collection are first, signed, foreign and limited edition novels, short stories, and photograph books; publications containing Welty’s earliest works; and scarce association items. Pearl McHaney, editor of the Eudora Welty Newsletter, introduced the collection and its creator, John S. Bayne, as well as the many people responsible for the successful event. Other notable speakers included the President of Georgia State University (and collector of children’s books), Carl Patton; the director of the University Library, Charlene Hurt; the Kenneth England Professor of Southern Literature, Thomas McHaney; and exhibit creator and Rare Book curator Laurel Bowen. Readings from Welty’s works were done by Pearl McHaney and Colleen O’Hare. For pictures of the event, click here.

University Archives celebrated the university’s 90th anniversary and Georgia Archives Week with an Open House. Artifacts, photos, and documents relating to the university’s 90-year history were displayed, mascot “Pounce” entertained guests, and members of the university community won nice prizes for participating in a lively “unusual facts about Georgia State” contest. Guests also enjoyed a faculty authors display and a slide show of historic university photographs. For pictures of the open house, click here. On October 7th, Dr. Merl E. Reed, historian, Professor Emeritus, and a founder of the Archives, presented a fascinating talk on “Turning Points in GSU History” based on his research into the university’s early history. The talk was well attended by both current and retired members of the university community.
