Journal Cancellations at the University Library

Dear Members of the Georgia State University Community:

In light of current budget uncertainties and in anticipation of no new funds added to the library materials budget for fiscal year 2010, the library is initiating a journal cancellation project. Based on average annual price increases of eight percent on journal subscriptions over the past several years, the library needs to identify for cancellation at least $400,000 in recurring commitments.

At our Journal Cancellation Project web page, you will find a memo from Nan Seamans, Dean of Libraries, a complete project timeline, and the list of titles that are candidates for cancellation. A combination of criteria were used to determine the titles on the list, including usage statistics, cost per use, and availability of alternative means of access to the title.

If you have a concern about specific titles on the list, please complete the online comment form available for each title. We would appreciate comments that justify the retention of the journal. If you have any questions, please contact your department’s liaison librarian or Skye Hardesty, Collection Development Officer.

Please note that the comment period for feedback is from 3/9/09 to 5/1/09.

We value your assistance in shaping the library’s journal collection to reflect the university’s current curriculum and research needs.

Updated: Blackwell journals currently unavailable

As of today, Blackwell journal content is hosted solely on Wiley InterScience. However, University Library subscriptions to Blackwell titles are not recognized by Wiley InterScience. Therefore, titles formerly available via Blackwell Synergy are currently unavailable. We are working with Wiley to correct this problem as quickly as possible.

Update 7/2/2008: The problems with access to Blackwell titles on Wiley InterScience continue. Although some subscribed content is now available, current issues (from the latest 12 months in most cases) remain inaccessible. We are continuing to work with Wiley to correct this problem as quickly as possible.

Update 7/3/2008: Wiley appears to have restored access to our Blackwell titles. However, two problems remain: 1) Find it @ GSU links for former Blackwell Synergy titles still resolve to the Wiley InterScience homepage, rather than the journal’s page. Wiley hopes to have this problem corrected soon. 2) Some individual articles are still unavailable. A list of title missing individual articles is here. Wiley states that these will be fixed by “mid-July.”

Now available: bepress journals

The library now has access to the the entire roster of peer-reviewed journals from Berkeley Electronic Press. The journals are available through the library’s Electronic Journal Locator; a list of bepress journals is here.

Although bepress journals were previously available to the GSU community under their quasi-open access model, the library’s subscription to ResearchNow Full Access allows members of the GSU community to access these titles without filling out a guest access form.

In addition to the journals, ResearchNow contains “all working papers, preprints and other grey literature content from institutional repositories hosted by bepress that have opted for inclusion, as well as subject-matter repository materials from the bepress Legal Repository and COBRA: Collection of Biostatistics Research Archive.”

ScienceDirect redesign

ScienceDirect has introduced a new interface and new features as part of comprehensive redesign, which is planned for release in stages over the next few years (previous post here).

Extensive user testing and market feedback indicates that 10 years after development commenced in 1995, ScienceDirect needs to be redesigned to meet the expectations of a new era. As a result of extensive research into current user behavior, whereby many of you provided much-appreciated input, we have gained invaluable insights into the type of activities your users now carry out. Some improvements you can expect to see later this year:

A simpler navigational path – a reduced amount of click-throughs, providing your users with what they want, faster.
A task-oriented homepage – allowing your users to perform a quick search, a browse, and set personalization features, all on one page.
Improved Quick Search option Quick Search has been radically changed to be able to clearly search terms in specific fields, author names, publication titles, and specific articles.
Modernized user interface – over the next few releases we are upgrading both the technologies we use and the user interface to offer more features, functionality and the look and feel required by today’s users.

In the next few months, we’ll make sure to update you on the changes at hand. We appreciate that any change to ScienceDirect affects our users. Therefore, each step in this series of changes will be accompanied by a clear set of communications. GSU users now have online access to the New England Journal of Medicine.

Description:

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) is a weekly general medical journal that publishes new medical research findings, review articles, and editorial opinion on a wide variety of topics of importance to biomedical science and clinical practice. Material is published with an emphasis on internal medicine and specialty areas including allergy/immunology, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology, kidney disease, oncology, pulmonary disease, rheumatology, HIV, and infectious diseases.

The NEJM is funded by the Urban Health Area of Focus. It can be accessed via the Electronic Journal Locator or via the GIL Online Catalog.

Emerald is in the process of upgrading its web site, and in the process has changed the URLs needed for accessing its journals. This has occurred without notice and is affecting the ability to link to the Emerald journals from the E-Journal Locator, GIL, and other sources.

Please be aware that these journals may be inaccessible via Find It (SFX) links from the E-Journal Locator, GIL, etc. If you are in need of one of the Emerald titles, please visit the Emerald web site (also available via the Library’s List of Databases), where you can browse to the the title you need.

Wiley InterScience TOC Alerts Now Require email Address for Login

For users who have registered to use personalized features (such as TOC alerts) on Wiley InterScience, Wiley has changed their policy. They are now requiring users who have registered with the site to update their logins with their email addresses:

Now, when a registered user comes to the Wiley InterScience site
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/
and enters their existing login, the following will occur:

1. User enters current login and password.

2. User is prompted to enter name, country, and an area of interest,
along with a single valid e-mail address.

3. User receives a one-time confirmation e-mail, then clicks on the
authentication link in the message. The verification process is
complete.

Afterward, users can login to the site with just their e-mail and
password. (NOTE: confirmation links expire after 24 hours; after that,
users can re-submit their info, if necessary)

This is a one-time process. Aside from the confirmation e-mail, users
will not be sent any further e-mail alerts from Wiley InterScience
unless they explicitly opt-in to receive such messages.

This will not affect users who access Wiley InterScience through GSU’s subscription and do not take advantage of personalized features such as TOC alerts.

Cambridge Journals Online outage

Cambridge University Press will be upgrading their Cambridge Journals Online (CJO) interface on August 6th and 7th.

To perform this upgrade they will be temporarily interrupting service to all CJO users. The site will be offline from 7pm on the 6th August until 4 am on the 7th August.

There is a full fix now in place for users trying to get to the Royal Society of Chemistry journals via SFX (links from the E-Journal Locator, GIL, or other sources). SFX links should now direct you to the specific journal title you need.
