Latin American Newspapers represents the initial result of the partnership between the Center for Research Libraries community and Readex, a division of NewsBank to systematically create an extensive Web-based collection of international newspapers. CRL will guarantee the long-term availability of this news content for the CRL community.

This groundbreaking online collection provides more than 35 fully searchable Latin American newspapers published in the 19th and 20th centuries. Featuring titles from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela and elsewhere, Latin American Newspapers offers unprecedented coverage of the people, issues and events that shaped this vital region between 1805 and 1922.

Latin American Newspapers features such key publications as La Nacion, La Prensa and Vanguardia (Buenos Aires), Correio da Manha and Jornal do Commercio (Rio de Janeiro), O Estado de São Paulo (São Paulo), Mercurio (Santiago), La Prensa (Havana), El Guatemalteco (Guatemala City), Daily Chronicle (Georgetown, Guyana), La Revista de Yucatan (Merida, Mexico), La Patria, Mexican Herald and El Monitor Republicano (Mexico City) , El Dictamen (Veracruz Llave, Mexico), La Estrella de Panama and Star & Herald (Panama City), El Peruano and West Coast Leader (Lima), Port of Spain Gazette (Port of Spain), the Venezuelan Herald (Caracas) and more than a dozen others.

With content from an eclectic variety of materials, including books, directories, bibles, sheet music, sermons and advertisements, Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Part II offers full-text search capabilities supported by comprehensive metadata. The materials in the collection support research in every academic discipline, including literature, history, geography, the social sciences, fine arts, medicine, science, religion, philosophy and law. Source institutions include The British Library, Oxford University, National Library of Scotland, University of Texas, and the Library of Congress.

The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online is the first comprehensive online resource devoted to music research of all the world’s peoples. More than 9,000 pages of material, combined with entries by more than 700 expert contributors from all over the world, make this the most complete body of work focused on world music.

Each volume contains an overview of the region, a survey of its musical heritage, traditions and themes; and a description of specific musical genres, practices, and performances. Articles include detailed photographs that show musicians, musical instrument, and the cultural context of dances, rituals, and ceremonies. Other images include drawings, maps, and musical examples for further study. Since its first publication in 1997, The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music has been the pre-eminent reference work for research in ethnomusicology.

The two clearinghouses that compiled the data for the Child Abuse, Child Welfare & Adoption Database, National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information and the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse were consolidated into the Child Welfare Information Gateway. The Child Welfare Information Gateway is managed by ICF International and is a service of the Children’s Bureau within the Administration for Children and Families of the Department of Health and Human Services.  The Gateway provides access to resources including print and electronic publications, websites, databases and more covering topics related to child safety, welfare and adoption.

In the late 1800’s, Dutch physician and feminist Aletta Jacobs and her husband C.V. Gerritsen began collecting books, pamphlets and periodicals reflecting the revolution of a feminist consciousness and the movement for women’s rights. By the time their successors finished their work in 1945, the Gerritsen Collection was the greatest single source for the study of women’s history in the world, with materials spanning four centuries and 15 languages.

The Gerritsen curators gathered more than 4,700 publications from continental Europe, the U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand, dating from 1543-1945. The anti-feminist case is presented as well as the pro-feminist; many other titles present a purely objective record of the condition of women at a given time.

The broad scope of the collection allows scholars to trace the evolution of feminism within a single country, as well as the impact of one country’s movement on those of the others. In many cases, it also provides easy access to primary sources otherwise available only in a few rare book rooms.

The Gerritsen Collection consists of two segments: the Periodical Series and the Monograph Language Series.

Periodical Series

Periodicals constitute 25 percent of the entire collection. For the years from 1860 through 1900, the period covered by most of the titles, there is no comparable resource. Gerritsen scrupulously sought complete runs, and her successors acquired additional materials to fill whatever gaps arose. The result is a collection containing such titles as The Suffragist (1913-21) and The Women’s Protest Against Woman Suffrage (1912-18).

Monograph Language Series

There are over 4,000 monographs and pamphlets, comprising 75 percent of the titles. They are grouped by language:

• English – With more than 2,000 titles, this is the greatest single source for tracing suffragism and feminism in the English-speaking world. Included are Carrie Chapman Catt’s Ought Women to Have Votes for Members of Parliament? (1879), as well as Anti-Suffrage Essays by Massachusetts Women (1916).
• German – These 929 titles document the history of an organized movement, as well as women and socialism, Jewish women’s status, and Swiss feminism.
• French – the 734 French titles cover women in the military, law, and reforms in women’s legal, civil, and economic rights, as well as women’s influence on French literature from Gallic times through World War II.
• Other languages – 12 languages and 472 titles.

For each monograph, The Gerritsen Collection includes an English-language summary of its contents.

The eighteenth century brought the written word to the masses. With the expiration of strict printing controls and the Industrial Revolution, a large portion of the population — previously unexposed to writings  was exposed to a diverse collection of printed material. With a newfound passion for literacy, and an eager audience, texts explored new themes and ideas ranging from social and economic analysis and criticisms, to theories on man and society. Gale’s Eighteenth Century Collections Online digitally captures this influential period and provides new research opportunities in ways previously unavailable.

In the most ambitious single digitization project ever undertaken, 138,000 English-language titles and editions published between 1701 and 1800 will be made available online. The product will allow full-text searching of 26 million pages of material, in essence, every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in the United Kingdom, along with thousands of important works from the Americas. Eighteenth Century Collections Online provides research opportunities in ways previously unavailable to a wide range of data spanning all disciplines. Eighteenth Century Collections Online is one of the largest sources of rare materials ever collected in microfilm and electronic formats. The collection is an ongoing project based on The English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC), a machine-readable union list of the holdings of the British Library, as well as those from more than 1,500 university, private, and public libraries worldwide.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online is divided into seven subject areas:

History and Geography Explore ancient and contemporary times, voyages and discoveries, biographies and memoirs, genealogical collections, gazetteers, church antiquities and tourist guides of Britain. Topics include chronologies, recreation, military, maps and topography. This collection presents a comprehensive picture of the American Revolution from the British perspective

Social Science and Fine Arts Social Science takes a look into manufacturers and merchants, artisans and skilled workers, international business, banking, taxation and lotteries. Topics include current events, social reform, business/economics/finance and political science. Fine Arts reviews music, painting, theater and architecture, building and carpentry, vocal and instrumental music, paintings, prints drawings, coins and metals, collectibles and private art collections

Women and Social Movements in the United States brings together primary documents, books, images, scholarly essays, book reviews, Web site reviews, and teaching tools, all documenting the multiplicity of women’s activism in public life. It’s one of the most heavily visited resources for women’s studies on the Web, and it appeals to students and scholars at all levels.

The new Scholar’s Edition features enhanced content and search tools that make it ideal for research and scholarship. It includes the Basic Edition plus 75,000 additional pages of previously inaccessible data and statistics from the publications of local and state commissions on women since 1963. EEBO contains digital facsimile page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America and works in English printed elsewhere from 1473-1700–from the first book printed in English by William Caxton, through the age of Spenser and Shakespeare and the tumult of the English Civil War.

The collection now contains about 100,000 of over 125,000 titles listed in Pollard & Redgrave’s Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640) and Wing’s Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700) and their revised editions, as well as the Thomason Tracts (1640-1661) collection and the Early English Books Tract Supplement.

Update: Eugene Power’s STC project and EEBO get brief mentions in a fine article on digitization by Anthony Grafton in the current issue of The New Yorker.  Of EEBO, Grafton writes:

Massive tomes in Latin and the little pamphlets that poured off the presses during the Puritan revolution schoolbooks, Jacobean tragedies with prompters’ notes, and political pamphlets by Puritan regicides are all available to anyone in a major library.

This project has been developed to encourage undergraduate work with rare primary documents. By using images of the texts rather than transcriptions, Empire Online enables students to connect with the past with greater immediacy. By retaining the look and feel of the original sources, we engender greater interaction with the material as students can understand better the circumstances in which sources were created and the ways in which the authors chose to present their arguments.

Each Section features thematic essays by leading scholars in the field of Empire Studies. The essays relate directly to the source material covered by the online publication with 30-50 hypertext links per essay to documentary evidence. Empire Online brings together the latest academic work with immediate access to relevant original documents. The project offers good quality, meaningful content that academics can readily integrate into their courses, project in the classroom, or use in course packs. The thematic essays introduce students to the material, suggest possible approaches, and place the documents within a broad historical, literary and cultural context.

Wherever possible we have included an entire document, complete manuscript or volume of a rare publication. We have not sought to use the sources in a prescriptive fashion. Sources are multivalent and can be approached in many ways.

CensusCD 1970 is the first product to allow access to the results of the 1970 US Census down to the Census tract.  Over 8,500 demographics and geographic identifiers exist for every geographic area. The counts are divided into 3 groups: geographic identifiers, population counts, and housing counts. In addition, a full set of 1970 tract maps, along with mapping software, has also been included.

Reports:
If you want an overview of an area, you can simply select the Geographic Area you want and Run a Snapshot report.
If you want more targeted information than is in the Snapshot report, use Counts to select the 1970 demographics you want and Run a Summary report.

The source of the data:
The data for CensusCD 1970 is the Fourth Count Population Summary Tape and Fourth Count Housing Summary Tape from the US Census Bureau.

Geographic Areas:
CensusCD 1970 contains 6 geographic summarization levels, the total number of each level is in parentheses: Nation (1) State (51) County (3,137) Tract/BNA (46,728) Place (22,529) MCD/CCD (35,195)

Export the file data into other systems like statistical (e.g. SAS, SPSS), database (e.g. Access, Oracle), spreadsheet (e.g. Excel, 1-2-3), or mapping (e.g. Arc View, MapInfo) packages.

Intended to cover biomedicine, chemistry and the Earth sciences, the site will host a wide range of research documents, including preprints, unpublished manuscripts, white papers, technical papers, supplementary findings, posters and presentations. All submissions will be reviewed by staff curators and accepted only if they are considered to be legitimate scientific contributions of likely interest to others in that field. No judgement is to be made about the quality or uniqueness of the work, and submissions are not subjected to peer review before they are released. Because of this, accepted submissions will usually be published within one working day, and no charge is made to either authors or readers.

Nature Precedings will make full use of participative features such as tagging, voting and commenting to facilitate the discovery of especially interesting and relevant content. We anticipate that the content will be mirrored by academic partner organizations, several of whom have been involved with us in developing this service. Classical Scores Library will contain 400,000 pages of classical scores from both in-copyright and public domain editions. The major composers output is represented, as well as many lesser known composers and works.

Content in the first release includes 800 scores (approx. 25,000 pages) of in-copyright material from Boosey and Hawkes and selected material from the University Music Editions microfilm series. 49 composers’ works are included in this release, including notable 20th-century composers such as Aaron Copland, Benjamin Britten, Igor Stravinsky, and Ned Rorem. This first release contains 16 full operas, 7 oratorios, over 50 string quartets, 27 symphonies, 60 concerti, and more.

The collection includes works spanning time periods from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Coverage of score types is comprehensive, with full scores, study scores, piano and vocal scores, and piano reductions.

The database has been indexed to enable users to search on musically relevant fields, such as composer, work/opus number, key, genre, instrument, time period; as well as score-specific fields, such as score type, duration, editor, arranger, publisher. We hope that this will enable users to search, analyze, and research scores in a simple but powerful manner.

Further releases will include the entire catalog of UME, as well as manuscript material from the Barry S. Brook Center for Music Research, and many new editions from other in-copyright publishers.

This unique and valuable collection contains digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals that originated between 1741, when Andrew Bradford’s American Magazine and Benjamin Franklin’s General Magazine were launched, and 1900. Deriving from the acclaimed American Periodicals Series microform collection, APS Online features over 1,100 periodicals spanning nearly 200 years-from colonial times to the advent of American involvement in World War II. Titles range from America’s first scientific journal, Medical Repository, to popular magazines like Vanity Fair and Ladies’ Home Journal.

American Periodicals Series Online chronicles the development of America across 200 years. The journals in this collection cover three broad periods:

• 89 journals published between 1740 and 1800 offer insights into America’s transition from a British colony to an independent nation. The journals support research for a range of academic fields. Titles include Massachusetts Magazine, which published America’s first short stories, and Thomas Paine’s Pennsylvania Magazine, which reported on inventions. One of the first mass printings of the Declaration of Independence, a letter by George Washington on the crucial Battle of Trenton, and the thoughts of Benjamin Franklin are among the highlights of content from this period.

• More than 900 titles from the first 60 years of the nineteenth century showcase “the golden age of American periodicals.” General interest magazines, children’s publications, and more than 20 journals for women are among the historically-significant content that also includes the serialization of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin in National Era. Like most great literary works of the nineteenth century, this piece first appeared in a magazine. Also available are hard-to-find materials, such as Edgar Allan Poe’s contributions to the Southern Literary Messenger, as well as the first appearances of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s stories in New England Magazine, and Margaret Fuller’s contributions to the Dial.
• 118 periodicals published during the Civil War (1861-1865) and Reconstruction (1865-1877) eras reflect the nation in turmoil and growth, and titles from the 1880s through 1900 capture the settling of the West and the emergence of modern America. Early professional journals, including Publications of the American Economic Association and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Proceedings, popular titles such as Scribner’s Monthly and Lippincott’s issued by publishing houses, celebrations of Americana in Ladies’ Home Journal, thoroughly-researched investigative journalism in McClure’s, and the incisive political and social commentary of Puck illustrate the variety of the American experience. Titles like Forum (1886-1930) and Forum and Century (1930-1940), and Littell’s Living Age (1844-1896) and Living Age (1897-1941), expand the range of primary source material in APS across 200 years.

Because the database contains digitized images of periodical pages, researchers can see all of the original typography, drawings, graphic elements, and article layouts exactly as they were originally published.

This is the online version of the 22-volume printed second edition of Encyclopaedia Judaica, published recently by Macmillan Reference USA (an imprint of Thomson Gale) and Keter Publishing House. This updated edition of the 1972 classic contains over 21,000 scholarly articles (with 2600 new entries), 600 maps, tables, and illustrations, 150 pages of color photos, 30,000 new bibliographical listings, and, according to the Gale web site, extensive new treatments of contemporary Jewish life, including added emphasis of the role of women and explorations of the full global scope of the Diaspora.

How Does It Work? The opening page shows a thumbnail photo of the cover of the print Encyclopaedia, along with publication data (ISBN, subjects, brief description). It also offers a Quick Search, with a Find search box, as well as options for Basic Search and Advanced Search. Basic Search lets you search (using a single box) within Document title, Keyword, or Entire document. Advanced Search gives you three rows of search boxes and lets you limit your results: to documents with images, by publication date or a range of dates, by publication title, to a subject area, or to a target audience. This search system is designed for the most part for other e-resources affording more options than this one does. Since there is only one option available here in most categories (the publication title is Encyclopaedia Judaica, the default subject is Religion, and the default target audience is Academic), it doesn’t make sense for users to be given the option of choosing from a single default. But that is a pitfall with software that’s been designed to serve disparate kinds of e-resources.

Can You and Your Patrons Use It? My first Quick search for netanyahu located the entry Netanyahu, Binyamin, with links to full text, two PDF pages, a link to the about page for the Encyclopaedia, and a link for ways to cite the article (or to export it into EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, or RefWorks), as well as a generic citation for the signed article. Quite impressive, except that during the first ten minutes or so of working within the entry, I completely missed the full text.

When I clicked that link, I was taken to a new screen with the citation for the entry without the full-text option. The text was separated from the citation and just far enough down the page that I couldn’t see it. So I had one of those reviewer disjunctured experiences of scratching my head, wondering if it was the resource or me, until I eventually located the full text. At that point, I was able to scan the text quickly, with the search term highlighted in red and with active hyperlinks.

Next I tried a Basic search for the words gush katif in the document title. It located a one-and-a-half-page article about the history of this group of 18 Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip. The graphics within articles (such as the maps) display more clearly in the PDF version, which makes for better printing as well. Each article is scholarly, signed, and remarkably up-to-date for a print-based resource.

How Good Is It? Despite some difficulty in getting to the full text, this is a work of tremendous scholarship and importance. As such, it deserves a 10.

The Bottom Line:  Students and scholars of Jewish studies and the librarians serving them have been waiting for years for this resource to be digitized. Strongly recommended for all libraries.

• QTVR Panoramas of World Architecture, Columbia University

Over 900 Quick Time Virtual Reality (QTVR) panoramas of world architecture from the Visual Media Center at Columbia University have been added to the ARTstor Digital Library. QTVR enables faculty and students to complement traditional side-by-side image comparisons with a mode of representation based on space and context. The panoramas range from antique sites such as the Pantheon and Domus Aurea in Rome, to important 20th century sites including Le Corbusier’s Church of Notre Dame du Haut and Rem Koolhaas’ Seattle Public Library.

ARTstor sponsored photography by Antonio Quattrone of Lorenzo Ghiberi and Filippo Brunelleschi’s competition panels can now be accessed through the ARTstor Digital Library. The competition panels are renowned relief sculptures depicting the Sacrifice of Isaac, created by Ghiberti and Brunelleschi in 1401-1402 in hopes of securing the commission to produce the set of Baptistery doors now known as the Gates of Paradise. Eighty-five color and black-and-white photographs offer a wide range of details and viewing angles.

The MFLINKS tables provide a reliable means to join CRSP Mutual Fund (MFDB) data that covers mutual fund performance, expenses, and related information to equity holdings data in the TFN/CDA S12 datasets. Using MFLINKS allows a researcher to gather detail on holdings for either particular funds or fund families and groups of funds at specific points in time. MFLINKS has been developed with Professor Russ Wermers (University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business) as a contributor and ongoing consultant to the project. Professor Wermers was one of the first researchers who used linked mutual fund data. A good example of how MFLINKS can be used is his article, “Mutual Fund Performance: An Empirical Decomposition into Stock-Picking Talent, Style, Transactions Costs, and Expenses” (Journal of Finance, 2000) that decomposes mutual fund performance into its various components based upon actual holdings.

About WRDS access: Users must open an account at the WRDS home page. WRDS will notify Liz Talamas, who is Georgia State’s WRDS administrator. After Liz verifies that the user is a Georgia State faculty, staff, or student, WRDS will forward the account information to that person who will then be able to access WRDS from anywhere in the world.
