"Open Access promomateriaal" by biblioteekje

The benefits of Open Access scholarly publishing (the principle that scholarly works should be available for free online) for faculty researchers may seem obvious: broader exposure for the research they publish, and faster and easier access to the materials they need.

Open Access has benefits for undergraduate researchers as well, though:

• You have access to more sources when using Open Access journals, because the library doesn’t have to subscribe to the journal you want. If it’s Open Access, you can get to the article you need.
• Research is easier when using Open Access journals, because it doesn’t matter whether you’re on or off campus — one click takes you to the article without having to log in to the GSU servers.

But undergraduate students are also scholars and authors, and may not be aware that GSU Library’s Digital Archive hosts an Open Access journal just for undergrad research authors: the Colonial Academic Alliance Undergraduate Research Journal. The CAAURJ is a peer-reviewed journal of undergraduate research, open to submissions by students at GSU or eleven other institutions.

If your work is accepted for publication it’s a great opportunity to showcase your best papers in a national forum, and because it’s open access, you can share links to your work in CAAURJ with potential graduate schools and employers. CAAURJ is just one of many open access journals of student research available on the web.

Some companies have stopped using DRM on their digital media, but it’s still a common practice. Some new e-books offered by public libraries (not GSU’s library) include DRM that deletes the e-book from the library’s collection after a certain number of checkouts.

As e-reader devices have become more popular over the last couple of years, DRM has become a more important issue for researchers and will remain so for some time. Chances are you have purchased digital media (music, video, text or games) encumbered with DRM restrictions and didn’t know it.

DRM is an interesting and complex issue for information users — it overlaps with questions of copyright and fair use, commerce and business practices, and how these things will influence the digital economy of the future.

The library continues to offer GSU researchers access to NYT articles through several of our databases — including historical issues. You can use Academic Search Complete for current issues, but it’s also available from LexisNexis, Factiva and other databases.

The Proquest New York Times Historical database gives us access back to the 19th century.

The GSU Library’s Special Collections has recently unveiled a digital edition of Atlanta’s own countercultural newspaper, The Great Speckled Bird (1968-1976) now available for viewing.

We also have access to other underground, alternative, and countercultural publications from the 1960s and 1970s, including:

The Southern Courier, civil rights newspaper published in Alabama

Creative Loafing (Atlanta), from 1974-present

Check the library catalog for more works on the underground press.

The Left Index database is a useful resource for researching the history and development of the political, social and cultural scholarship of the left. Topics include labor, environment, civil rights, art and philosophy of the movement.

Hoffner, C., & Cohen, E. (2009). Audience Perceptions of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder on Monk: Social Identity, Presumed Media Influence, and Behavioral Outcomes. Conference Papers — International Communication Association, 1-37.

This study co-authored by Dr. Cynthia Hoffner examined fans of the television show Monk and their perceived influence of the program on their attitudes toward Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Overall the authors found that Monk created a positive influence on attitudes toward OCD and increased willingness of those with the disorder to seek treatment.

Bruner, M. L. (2009). Democracy’s debt: the historical tensions between political and economic liberty. Amherst, N.Y.: Humanity Books.

Dr. Michael Bruner’s book surveys the history of argumentation related to wealth and statecraft, analyzing which forms of governance have provided the mose useful guides for the reform of contemporary institutions in charge of global governance.

Halim, S., & Meyers, M. (2010). News Coverage of Violence Against Muslim Women: A View From the Arabian Gulf. Communication, Culture & Critique, 3(1), 85-104.

This article co-authored by Dr. Marian Meyers analyzes Arabian Gulf newspaper coverage of violence against Muslim women to determine whether coverage reflects traditional Islamic or Islamic feminist perspectives. The authors state that most coverage reflected a patriarchal ideology, but found that some content reflected a feminist perspective.

Tindall, N. T. (2009). In search of career satisfaction: African-American public relations practitioners, pigeonholing, and the workplace. Public Relations Review, 35(4), 443-445.

Dr. Natalie Tindall’s article investigated African-American public relations practitioners’ career satisfaction and their perceptions of racial tokenism and pigeonholing in the workplace. She found that a majority of those surveyed had experienced racism in their professional lives.

(And more…) Some of our Communication faculty are fans of these DVDs for classroom use, but many of these titles would be great for Business, Women’s Studies, or other disciplines too. These, and all our other DVDs, are located on Library South 2.

The Encyclopedia of Communication Theory provides students and researchers with an overview of contemporary communication theory. Entries address topics related not only to paradigms, traditions, and schools, but also metatheory, methodology, inquiry, and applications and contexts.

The Encyclopedia of Journalism covers print, broadcast, and Internet journalism; U.S. and international perspectives; history; technology; legal issues and court cases; ownership; and economics.

Both titles are part of the Gale Virtual Reference Library. A basic search of the GVRL will include results from both encyclopedias, or you can go to Advanced Search and enter “Encyclopedia of Communication Theory” or “Encyclopedia of Journalism” as Publication Title to search each individually.

Open source software like Firefox is free in more than one sense: it costs you nothing, but it’s also “free” for anyone to examine how it works and make modifications. That means that it’s designed for programmers anywhere in the world to spot bugs, create add-ons that make it work the way you want it to, and add functions like LibX and Zotero for specialized needs like library research.

That’s just one of the tricks the free LibX library toolbar can do: it adds one-click GSU Library links to Amazon book pages, Wikipedia articles, New York Times book reviews, and more.

LibX is a plugin for Firefox and Internet Explorer. Its features include:

• A search bar that searches the library’s catalog and databases
• A right-click library search menu — just select some text like a book title, right-click and choose “Search GIL” to search the catalog
• Automatic links to library resources added to sites like Amazon, Google and Wikipedia
• An easy “reload via library” option to get access to paid subscription resources

The library is offering two workshops on the bibliography software Zotero in February, one in person and one online. Zotero is a Firefox plugin that makes it easy to save citations and automatically create bibliographies in Word. It’s like having EndNote running inside your browser! It’s easy to use and free. Zotero

If you’re using Zotero 2.0, update to the latest version and you’ll have a new File Syncing option in the preferences. Just check both “Sync attachment files” options and select Zotero storage (like this). This works with both personal libraries and group libraries. The first 100 megs of storage is free, and Zotero offers inexpensive additional storage options.
