If you have a Windows computer, it probably came with Internet Explorer as your default browser. However, the open source (that is, free!) mozilla browser is one alternative to IE. We’ve found that Firefox
- works better when reserving study rooms in the library
- provides faster responses for requesting your PIN for the GIL catalog
- and it allows you to use the (also free) citation manager Zotero
Open source software like Firefox is free in more than one sense: it costs you nothing, but it’s also “free” for anyone to examine how it works and make modifications. That means that it’s designed for programmers anywhere in the world to spot bugs, create add-ons that make it work the way you want it to, and add functions like LibX and Zotero for specialized needs like library research.
